Space Exploration:
Introduction to Database
To gain an understanding about
databases, students study the Space Exploration database provided
with this project. Students view records in the database to learn
about important events such as when man landed on the moon, deployed
the Hubble Space Telescope, or lived on the International Space
Station. By filtering records, students are able to read about the
space program from its early beginnings in the 1960's to today.

There are records
about:
-
Mercury program
-
Gemini program
-
Apollo program
-
Space Shuttle
program
-
International
Space Station
-
Famous astronauts:
Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, John Young, Sally
Ride, Guion Bluford
Space Suit: Add a
Record into a Database
Next, students become
astronauts. Using Microsoft Paint, students edit a photograph to
place their head into a spacesuit template. Upon completion,
students join the prestigious team at TechnoNASA. The edited
photograph, as well as other personal information is entered into
the Space Exploration database to learn data entry techniques.

Pick from three spacesuit templates.
Cyberspace Mission: Plan to
Construct a Database
Students blast into cyberspace on
the spacecraft Internet Explorer. Their mission is to collect items
from the World Wide Web and store the information in a database.
To prepare for this mission,
students complete a planning sheet provided with the project. This
organizer helps them pick a topic and the fields of information that
will be in the database.
Afterwards, students use the
Internet to search for information. Facts are recorded in an
organizer and pictures are collected of each item.

An organizer is used to record
information.
Students can construct a database
about any topic:
- Planets - classify planets by
type (gas giant, terrestrials)
- Food - classify food by group
(meat, dairy, bread, fruits/vegetables)
- Family - classify people by role
(parent, sibling, cousin)
- Animals - classify by class
(reptile, mammals, birds, insect)
- Artwork - classify by style
(modern, impressionism, realism)
- Books - classify by genre
(science fiction, horror, mystery)
Build a Database Table
Detailed instructions help students
construct a database. To start, students create a table in the
database that includes fields such as item name, description, date,
and category. The properties on each field are adjusted to make data
entry consistent. A marking sheet is provided to assess the table
design.

The table includes a range of data
types.
Create a Database Form
Students create a simple data entry
form. The layout of the form is customized to improve the design.
Afterwards, data for each object collected on the cyberspace mission
is entered into the database using the form. A marking sheet is
provided to assess the form.

The data entry form is used to enter
each record.
Generate a Report
Students follow detailed
instructions to generate a simple report. The records in the report
are grouped by category to create an organized summary of the data.
A marking sheet is provided to assess the report.

A report groups the information by
category.
Database Technology Skills
- create a database that stores
information
- add a record
- filter records using search
criteria
- build a table to store data in
a database
- add a primary key to a table
- add a field description for a
field in a table
- select the data type for a
field in a table
- set the field properties for a
field in a table
- create a form to make data
entry easy
- customize the appearance of a
form
- enter data using a table and
form
- generate a report
- group and sort fields in a report
Meaningful Extension Activities
and Skill Reviews
The TechnoMission technology project
includes meaningful extension activities and skill reviews that challenge students. Activities include:
- My Family:
Complete the skill review to build a simple database table that
stores information about the members in your family.
- Food Groups: Complete
the skill review to build a table and simple data entry form to
categorize food items by their group.
- About the Planets:
Complete the skill review to build a table, create a form, and
generate a report about the planets in our solar system.
- About Space Missions:
Filter records to learn more about space missions.
- Make a Mission Patch: Study
mission patches. Use Microsoft Word to create a mission patch.
- Blast Off:
Edit a photograph to place your head into a space ship.
