Discover the world of word processing for beginners with TechnoEditor. In this project, elementary and middle school students assume the role of an editor. They learn how to enhance the quality of a document to prepare it for publication. As they edit a collection of tales written for children, students learn essential word processing skills. They explore text, graphic, and page layout formatting techniques to revise stories, comics, and poetry. Lessons are for either Google Docs or Microsoft Word.
Blend Tech and Language Arts
Integrate TechnoEditor into an engaging language unit, laying a strong foundation for learners to be future-ready. The essential writing, technology, and communication skills acquired in this project will prove invaluable in their educational and career paths.
Build Expertise with Age-Appropriate Lessons
Engage students ages 8-11 with easy, illustrated instructions and authentic activities that introduce word processing. Templates provide support as learners explore text formatting, inserting pictures, working with objects, creating Word Art, using the clipboard for cut, copy, and paste, adjusting page layout, and more! When students learn and apply word processing skills in real tasks, they understand and recall them more effectively.
Helpful Resources at Your Fingertips
TechnoEditor includes a digital Teacher Guide with easy to follow instructions. Use assessment tools like marking sheets, quizzes, a sample completed storybook, and a skill checklist. Each of the six sessions wraps up with review questions, skill reviews for practice, and optional challenging extension activities.
Hands-On Activities for Grades 3-6
Assignments encourage exploration, discovery, and experimentation, boosting students’ confidence as they create content for a book. Upon completion, they proudly share their unique and interesting document with a target audience of younger children.
The TechnoEditor course has 18 assignments divided into six sessions.
Session 1: Edit the Front Cover
Students learn how to perform basic word processing tasks such as how to select, format, and delete text. They apply this knowledge to edit the front cover of the book, "A Collection of Stories Written for Children".
Session 2: Edit a Poem
Students continue to edit the book, "A Collection of Stories Written for Children". As an editor, students apply their knowledge of formatting to make the descriptive words in the poem, "A Fun Day in the Sun", look like their meaning. Afterwards, students learn how to insert a picture and format the appearance to make the poem look spectacular.
Session 3: Edit a Story
Students add interest to the story "The Unbelievable Trip to the Store". They learn how to insert and format images. Then they apply these skills to illustrate remarkable events including seeing a car with an elephant on its roof, witnessing a monkey in front of the store door, and glimpsing a frog riding on the back of a bird. This "unbelievable" story will teach students picture formatting techniques.
Session 4: Edit a Comic
Students continue their job as editors. This time, they are editing the content of a comic strip. To prepare for this activity, they must first learn how to draw and format shapes and Word art. Once students can apply their skills confidently, they create a funny comic that will make the children reading it laugh and smile.
Session 5: Cut, Copy, and Paste
Students learn how to use the cut, copy, and paste tools to edit a story. To begin, students engage in a practice exercise. Once they have mastered these basic editing tools, they apply their knowledge to edit the story entitled "The Copy Cats.".
Session 6: Final Edit
Students prepare the storybook "A Collection of Stories Written for Children" for publication. To begin, they edit the document to correct any spelling or grammar errors. Afterwards, they use a checklist to verify that the document is ready for publication. Last minute changes are made to the book. Once it is perfect, the document is shared with others.

Every course includes a schedule. It lists the time recommended for each assignment. Typically, it takes between 30-60 minutes to complete an assignment depending on the grade level. Based on this time frame, a typical course takes between 360-600 minutes to complete. This is about 6-8 weeks if your students have computer class twice a week. However, if your students have computer class every day, a course can be completed in about 2-3 weeks.
How do I decide which assignments to teach?
You may not have the time to teach an entire TechnoKids course. The good news is that TechnoKids offers flexibility. Many courses can be shortened by omitting assignments or lengthened by including skill reviews and extension activities. You can easily adapt the course to suit your schedule. Refer to the Ideas for Implementation section in the teacher guide for suggestions.
Does the course integrate into other subjects?
TechnoKids courses are inter-disciplinary. This means the lesson plans blend computing skills with general content areas such as language arts, geography, or business studies. If you do not have a dedicated digital literacy class, refer to the Technology Integration Suggestions section in each teacher guide for ideas on how you can include the course in other subject areas.
Is the course a subscription?
Yes. When you purchase a course, you have access to the instructional materials for 12 months. After that time, should you want to continue, you will need to renew the subscription.
Is the course online?
Yes. You must sign into TechnoHub to access the course content from your bookshelf. The teacher guide and student workbook for a course are available online only. However, resources such as assessment tools, handouts, course slides, templates, and samples are downloadable.
