    Description

Digital Marketing for Teens in Grades 8-12

Hands-on learning makes digital marketing for teens meaningful and engaging.  In the TechnoAd course students gain essential media literacy skills by becoming digital marketers. They produce a video ad to sell a new product. Their campaign begins with an analysis of selling tactics used in media messages. Next, they investigate how their target customer interacts with online advertising. To further prepare for the task, students explore video production techniques. Once aware of how companies manipulate viewers, they team up to create an advertisement using Blender. Upon completion, they summarize their marketing campaign in a professional report.

    Promote Media Literacy Skills

The TechnoAd course develops the analytical skills required to be media savvy. It includes links to video ads posted by popular brands. Middle school and high school students analyze the advertisements to build awareness of the selling tactics and production techniques used by advertisers to sway viewers.

    Engage in Data Analysis

Just like a real digital marketing pro, your students will analyze consumer data to make decisions about their own ad campaign. They conduct market research to investigate online behavior. These assignments are ideal for a high school marketing or business course.

    Master Camera Techniques

Practice makes perfect! Prior to filming their own video ad, the assignments in TechnoAd, teach students about the camera. They learn how to communicate a message using different shot types, angles, and movement. As well, fun practice activities build expertise in capturing photos and video. Of course, these activities are perfect for a media arts, photography, or video production unit.

    Teach Video Production

The instructions in the TechnoAd course use Blender, which is free software, to edit the footage. Students learn essential skills such as how to trim clips, layer content, overlay text, animate graphics, and more. You can use your own preferred video editing software, although having detailed steps is helpful to beginners.

    Build Teamwork Skills

The TechnoAd course prepares students for the workplace, where being a team player is highly valued. To simulate the real world, students form production teams to film a video ad.  Together, they consider target audience, selling techniques, action, characters, props, and camera position. After filming the raw shots as a group, each student uses Blender to produce their own final product. Although, students could make the video ad on their own, collaborating is fun and rewarding.

Ideal for a Marketing or Media Arts Course

If you are teaching a marketing or video production unit, TechnoAd is an excellent fit. It has everything you need to teach. The Teacher Guide has detailed lesson plans with assignments. There are customizable assessment tools such as marketing sheets, reviews, and skill reviews. Plus you will receive access to video footage for editing exercises, links to sample video ads, and more.

    Course

The TechnoAd course has 15 assignments divided into six sessions.

    Session 1: Analyze Online Advertising

Students investigate their exposure to online advertisers. To start, they consider consumption of media messages. Next, they critically think about how selling tactics, hidden messages, and stereotypes in video ads might influence their behavior or thinking. Afterwards, they build a questionnaire using Forms to discover how people interact with online advertising. These metrics will not only raise media awareness but will also inform placement of their video ad in upcoming sessions. An optional challenge explains how to create a pivot table in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets to compare groups of data to notice differences in gender or age.

    Session 2: Apply Camera Techniques

Students become videographers. To start, they analyze video ads to notice how shots, angles, and movement convey a message. Next, they experiment with a video camera to capture wide, medium, and tight shots. Also, they explore how zoom, pan, and tilt control viewer attention. These operational techniques will be used later to produce their own video ad.

Session 3: Explore Video Editing Tools

Students discover how to use Blender tools to create an ad. First, students customize the program window for video editing. Next, they import clips and explore how to arrange media in channels. They trim, split, and overlay strips to produce a 15 second video that will captivate customer interest. These production techniques will be applied in the upcoming sessions to advertise a new product.

    Session 4: Advertise a Product

Students design a video ad concept. Working as part of a creative team, they develop an advertisement for a new product. They write a script and storyboard for each shot. Upon completion, they apply their knowledge of marketing and video production techniques to capture the footage.

    Session 5: Create Video Ad

Students become video editors. They produce their own unique video ad using the footage captured from the previous session. To start, they import media into Blender. They then apply their editing skills to produce a fifteen-second advertisement. Upon completion, they prepare to write a Marketing Campaign report by exporting the video in different file formats.

    Session 6: Report Marketing Strategy

Students summarize their marketing campaign. Using either Microsoft Word or Google Docs they explain how their video targets a specific audience. Based on survey data, they recommend the best time of day and digital channel for the ad. To create a professional-looking document they format the layout to include a table of contents, headings, page numbering, and more.

Optional Media Literacy and Video Production Lessons

    • Spot the Selling Techniques: Analyze a video ad.
    • Control Ads: Learn about tracking tech.
    • Slogans and Catchphrases: Create slogans.
    • Rule of Thirds: Examine shots.

    FAQ

Have questions? We’re here to help.

    View All FAQ

How long does it take to teach a course?

Every course includes a schedule. It lists the time recommended for each assignment. Typically, it takes between 30-60 minutes to complete an assignment depending on the grade level. Based on this time frame, a typical course takes between 360-600 minutes to complete. This is about 6-8 weeks if your students have computer class twice a week. However, if your students have computer class every day, a course can be completed in about 2-3 weeks.

How do I decide which assignments to teach?

You may not have the time to teach an entire TechnoKids course. The good news is that TechnoKids offers flexibility. Many courses can be shortened by omitting assignments or lengthened by including skill reviews and extension activities. You can easily adapt the course to suit your schedule. Refer to the Ideas for Implementation section in the teacher guide for suggestions.

Does the course integrate into other subjects?

TechnoKids courses are inter-disciplinary. This means the lesson plans blend computing skills with general content areas such as language arts, geography, or business studies. If you do not have a dedicated digital literacy class, refer to the Technology Integration Suggestions section in each teacher guide for ideas on how you can include the course in other subject areas.

    Is the course a subscription?

Yes. When you purchase a course, you have access to the instructional materials for 12 months. After that time, should you want to continue, you will need to renew the subscription.

    Is the course online?

Yes. You must sign into TechnoHub to access the course content from your bookshelf. The teacher guide and student workbook for a course are available online only. However, resources such as assessment tools, handouts, course slides, templates, and samples are downloadable.
